A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
