Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
