EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
