Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and former President allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
