One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
