Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
