Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest certain rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
